What Is Tsuihou? Anime's Banishment Genre, Explained
You have seen the scene. A party of adventurers tells one member he is dead weight, and he walks off alone. That is not a generic fantasy opening. It is a genre, and it has a name.
Tsuihou and zamaa
Tsuihou (追放) means banishment, or expulsion. In Japanese fan shorthand, a tsuihou story is one where the hero gets thrown out of the group, and the story is about what happens next.
The word is almost never used alone. It comes paired with zamaa (ざまぁ), which is harder to translate politely. The closest English is "serves you right."
Zamaa is the payoff. The party falls apart without him. The kingdom starts losing. Someone comes crawling back. Most readers are not there for the hero's new life. They are there for that.
Where the genre came from
It comes from Shousetsuka ni Narou, which translates to "Let's Become a Novelist." It is Japan's largest free web novel platform, and anyone can post on it. No agent, no editor, no publisher.
Around the middle of the 2010s, publishers noticed that adapting a web novel with a proven readership was easier and safer than commissioning something original. The pipeline became web novel, then light novel, then manga, then anime.
That pipeline is the whole story. These shows were not picked by an executive with a theory about what audiences want. They were picked by having already proven, in public, that readers would keep clicking. And what readers kept clicking on was this.
Three versions of the same skeleton
The loud one. In My Gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha, a boy named Light is the only human in a party of nine races. They take him into the world's worst dungeon and drop him into it. What he finds at the bottom is that his gift was never weak, only untested. Everything after that is zamaa.
The one that grew up. Welcome to the Outcast's Restaurant! opens on the same beat. Dennis is expelled from the strongest party in the world, blamed for a failed quest. Its Japanese title is Tsuihosha Shokudo, almost literally "the Exile's Diner," so the genre word is right there in the name. And then Dennis does not go get revenge. He opens a restaurant, because cooking was always the thing he loved and the thing nobody valued.
The quiet one. The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows follows Zenos, a self-taught healer from the slums who is used and then discarded. With no money and no license, he opens an illegal clinic and treats the people nobody else will. The story quietly points out that the party never needed him. The slums did.
Why the formula works
Every one of these is a workplace story in a fantasy costume. A person is on a team. The team measures value one narrow way. The person's actual value does not fit that measurement, so it reads as zero. They get removed. Then reality gets a vote.
That is not a Japanese feeling, it is just a feeling. But it is worth knowing the genre exploded in a country with a strong tradition of long-term company loyalty, where being told you do not fit the team carries particular weight.
How to tell a good one from a bad one
Plenty of these shows are not good. The formula is easy to write and hard to write well, and the market flooded. The failure mode is always the same: if the hero was secretly the strongest all along, he was never really vulnerable, and if he was never vulnerable, none of it meant anything.
The good ones make the new life the point instead of the revenge. Dennis has a restaurant to run and it is hard. Zenos has patients who can still die. Being thrown out was the beginning of something, not just the setup for a told-you-so.
So next time a show opens with a party kicking somebody out, ask what the hero does with the freedom. If the answer is only revenge, you already know the whole show.
